Part of Santa Barbara County, the city was officially incorporated back in 1888. Prior to the coming of Spanish Missions which were set up in the area, this land was home to the Chumash tribe. The city takes its name from “Lum Poc,” a Chumash word which means lagoon or little lake. This name was changed to Lumpoco by the Spanish who established Mission La Purisima Concepcion in the area in 1787. By the time 1874 rolled in, the area where Lompoc, CA real estate now stands was a temperance colony. Although the temperance colony was supposed to be called New Vineland, it remained Lompoc.
